Welcome to the Center for Environmental Education at Northern Kentucky University!

The NKU Center for Environmental Education is a member of the Kentucky University Partnership for Environmental Education. The center provides professional development for pre-service and in-service teachers through courses, curriculum training and other programs. As part of P-12 outreach, the center loans resources and activity trunks to teachers and personnel leads environmental instruction for school students. The center collaborates with other university organizations, the Greater Cincinnati Environmental Educators, and is involved in projects with the larger community. Center personnel are also actively engaged in environmental education research. During the last year over 500 pre-service or in-service teachers, 3200 P-12 students, and 1100 community members directly benefited from NKU Center for Environmental Education programs and collaborations.

The Center for Environmental Education at Northern Kentucky University was established in August 2002 with the financial support of the United States Department of Education, through the spearheading efforts of Congressman Ed Whitfield and Senator Jim Bunning.  These funds were distributed to each of the state university Centers for Environmental Education through Murray State University.

Financial support was provided from 2002-2010 through interest generated from the PRIDE fund (HB 174).  The PRIDE fund was established by vote of the Kentucky General Assembly in the 2000 regular session.  The interest from the PRIDE fund is distributed through the Kentucky Environmental Education Council to the Centers for Environmental Education at each of the 8 state universities in Kentucky.

NKU CINSAM provided funds for the initial set of activity trunks that are loaned to educators.

Recent funding has been provided by:

Lafarge Gypsum, Silver Grove, KY - Initial Corporate Partner and Sponsor! Lafarge Health & Safety Logo

NKU Center for Civic Engagement for updating activity trunks and creating two new Natural Disasters trunks.

University Community Partnership grant to collaborate with Split Rock Conservation Park in Boone County to create learning stations and curricula, professional development workshops, and conduct environmental stewardship days with the help of ECOS.

NASA Aerospace Education Services Project National Space Grant Foundation to develop and implement an Energy Education professional development program.
